2024 Topics

 September

The Basics of Radiology Business (Richard Duszak, MD, FºÚÁÏÍø, FRBMA)

Leadership is about motivating and inspiring people to take organizations to the next level, but leaders must master practice basics (particularly navigating finances and legal issues) to create time and bandwidth to focus on truly transformational work. In this online module and ensuing live discussion session, learners will be introduced to basics of leadership and identify financial and legal pain points that could prevent them from succeeding in their broader more aspirational goals. Course attendees will be introduced to concepts and resources that will facilitate their lifelong learning as leaders in their future practices.

The Value of Being a Mentor: Building Your Own Skills and Finding a Higher Purpose (Amy Kotsenas, MD)

Most radiologists have had mentors by the time they enter practice. In this session, we will focus on the value of being a mentor to others. Mentoring relationships foster the development of the mentor’s own critical skills of listening, developing empathy, providing feedback and holding others accountable. Mentorship also provides benefits to the organization by building relationships, creating a culture of belonging and ensuring a pipeline of succession. Finally, mentoring promotes giving of oneself to a higher cause and allows the mentor to find a higher purpose. Mentoring is ultimately a win-win-win for the mentee, our departments and organizations and ultimately for the mentor.

 October

Personal Finance and Leadership: Making Better Decisions (Kurt Schoppe, MD)

People make two common mistakes when thinking about personal finance and leadership; they are both inaccessibly complex, and studying them can be pushed off until later. I disagree with both. Personal finance and leadership skills are based on basic tools that are easy to learn. We are going to explore these fundamental skills and build them into a framework for improved decision-making, which we can then use to approach both common and novel challenges.

Negotiations: Basics Skills for Life and Leadership (Lauren Nicola, MD)

We will discuss the concept of interest-driven negotiations and communication skills through examples and real-world application. We'll focus on four principles of successful negotiation and highlight how these skills translate into more effective leadership.

 November

Health Care Disparities and Diversity in the Workplace (Gloria Guzman, MD, MBA, MSc, MPH)

Tips and Tools for Building and Growing Your First Practice (Anne Gill, MD)

This session will include personal insights and advice for the new radiologist as they prepare to join their future practice. Additionally, we will discuss tips and tools for building a practice once the radiologist is more acclimated to life after residency.

 December

Change Management (Ryan Lee, MD, FºÚÁÏÍø, MRMD)

Servant Leadership (Alan Matsumoto, MD, MA, FºÚÁÏÍø)

This presentation will explain what servant leadership is, how 10 characteristics lay the foundation for servant leadership and why servant leadership is important.  In this session, there will be some quotes and questions to challenge each of us to reflect on what aspects of leadership we value most and wish to emulate.
