In today's healthcare world, it's all about the ecosystem. But what is the healthcare ecosystem? And why does it matter to radiologists?

Traditionally and historically, business systems are oversimplified as a relationship between a purchaser and a provider. With the passage of time, it has become evident that the connection between purchaser and provider is not all encompassing; business relationships are complicated, involving many variables, entities and individuals.

In the business world, the complexities of an ecosystem exist with significant levels of interconnections between numerous forces and entities that — on first glance — may not be apparent. Many of these interconnections are fundamental and essential to success, and effective strategies demand an understanding and prioritization of the business ecosystem and the variables that contribute to success and survival.

The radiology ecosystem does not simply exist as a relationship between a purchaser and a provider. Our complex system includes third-party payers, regulators, health systems, equipment manufacturers, and competing groups and practice models as several complicating interconnections. An understanding of business ecosystems may help us appropriately and effectively broaden our understanding of our radiology ecosystem as we strategize for our greatest success.

I hope you'll join me for the 2021 RLI Summit, held virtually on Sept. 10 and 11. My radiology leadership and business school expert colleagues and I are excited to dive deeper into radiology leadership in the healthcare ecosystem with robust lectures, hands-on breakout sessions and interactive case study reviews. We’ll equip you to lead your departments and practices with success — and through a new lens.

Register now to attend the 2021 RLI Summit, and I look forward to seeing you virtually!
