2022 State Elections See Changes in the States

Thirty-six states held gubernatorial elections this month. State legislative seats were up for grabs in 46 states, and voters also considered ballot measures in several states.

As of press time, following is a recap of election outcomes:

  • Nine new governors will take office in 2023: Arkansas, Arizona, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Oregon. Alaska’s gubernatorial race is still uncalled.
  • Four governor seats flipped. Democrats will control the governor’s office in Arizona, Maryland and Massachusetts, while Republicans flipped the Nevada governor’s seat.
  • Three state legislative chamber flipped. The Michigan House and Senate will now be under Democratic control as will the Minnesota Senate. Six state legislative chamber races have not been called.
  • A significant ballot measure passed in South Dakota that expands Medicaid eligibility to persons over age 18 and under 65 whose income is at or below 133% of the federal poverty level plus 5%, for the applicable family size as provided in federal law.
