In New York, legislation that would expand the scope of practice for a physician assistant (PA) was recently introduced and referred to the Senate Higher Education Committee.
If enacted, the bill would permit the performance of medical services by a PA without physician supervision if their scope of practice, education and training exceeds 3,600 hours.
The New York State Radiological Society opposes this measure.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently approved the state’s 2022–2023 budget, which included a provision to allow a nurse practitioner with more than 3,600 hours of experience to practice without a written practice agreement with a physician.
