The Physician Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) held its quarterly public meeting March 7–8, where total cost of care (TCOC) models were discussed. Population-based TCOC models are a type of alternative payment model where payment is determined by a composite measure made up of costs and utilization for all covered medical services delivered to an individual or group.
Sessions during the meeting covered key characteristics of TCOC models, best practices for improving beneficiary affordability, the role of specialty care models for patients with chronic diseases, and case studies of states that have successfully implemented care models.
PTAC members gave their perspectives on how these models can play a role in optimizing healthcare delivery and how to prepare for the transition from fee-for-service care to TCOC models.
PTAC is an independent federal advisory committee that makes recommendations to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on stakeholder-submitted physician-focused Medicare payment models and related topics.
